Thayne Family Ishness

Thayne History

People often don't really think about names (at least in western culture) it seems. A person can be named    {something weird - like Buggerman}   and people don't give it much of a thought. "Hello, Mr. Buggerman, happy Monday!"

  • Or maybe there are more common names, like Smith, or Kent, or Rodriguez.

I guess, back in the day, or pehaps it's better to say that "I've heard it said" that people would take be named by profession or relations. Back before surnames were a thing.

  • I once knew a person who's namebadge read "NoLastName"....*  He was from a place where people only had one name!

So someone would be James Mark's son. and later be labeled James Markson.

But Thayne isn't quite that way - it's more of a profession - origin name.

Since I was very young, I heard it said that a Thayne was a nobleman in feudal times whose primary function was to field an army or battalion.
Unlike an Earl or whatever they might be called - the Feudal fellow who was responsible to get peasants to be farmers and provide food for the king.
A Thayne, at least only had to provide able bodied fighters, and I suppose support them in the off season.

Later, I heard it said that a Thayne was simply a more 'northern' way of describing a lord. Somewhere in a Shakespeare play, is a Thane.

If you stop and look around, thinking about Thayne or Thane or Thayn you start to see them everywhere - or maybe these places.
\* MarchThanes in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
\* Thanes in Game of Thrones (I've been told)
\* That Shakespeare play
\* The name of the guy running this site.
\* Maybe, even in your own home!  T

The more latitude we take in thinking about the surname Thayne (let's not mention all the people whose given / first name is Thayne.

  • Someone once asked me if I was related to Thayne Allred... probably -but not because we shared the 'Thayne' name* .

Is it an English surname?

I have heard that the Thayne name is Welch.
I have heard that the Thayne name is English.
I have heard that the Thayne name is Scottish.
I have even seen Thayne as a name on people from India.
I have heard that it is a name that Mexicans have. True. That's me.

Thayne -ish

I came up with the Thayne -ish name for this site as I tried to think of something unique, yet also a little broader.
The "ish" grammar has always seemed to me to be kind of odd. So, why not incorporate that here!    You can read about 'ishness' on the main page.

The tiki-index.php was named. I guess it(HomePage).
