Once a person is in this condition, their bodies don&#8217;t always accept the protien.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The key solution is slow introduction of proteins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">&nbsp;Refeeding syndrome<\/a>&nbsp; where if nutrition is re-introduced too heavily, the body fails to properly adjust and causes a variety of health concerns. Care must be taken to not overfeed a person who has been malnourished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">Edema<\/a>&nbsp;is part of each of these situations.&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>&nbsp; But for Kwasiokor &#8211;&nbsp; &#8220;Edema caused by malnutrition defines&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">kwashiorkor<\/a>, an acute form of childhood protein-energy malnutrition characterized by edema, irritability, anorexia, ulcerating dermatoses, and an enlarged liver with fatty infiltrates.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third Spacing&nbsp;<br>A kind of edema that a person who has been dehydrated experiences is called &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">third spacing<\/a>&#8216;.&nbsp; Fluids accumulate in tissue instead of being used by properly by cells.&nbsp; &nbsp;This means that even getting IVs may not help dehydration when a person is third spacing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Wikipedia:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kwashiorkor<\/strong>&nbsp;is a severe form of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">malnutrition<\/a>, caused by a deficiency in dietary protein. The extreme lack of protein causes an osmotic imbalance in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">gastro-intestinal system<\/a>&nbsp;causing swelling of the gut diagnosed as an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">edema<\/a>&nbsp;or retention of water.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">[4]<\/a>&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Refeeding syndrome<\/strong>&nbsp;is a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">syndrome<\/a>&nbsp;consisting of metabolic disturbances that occur as a result of reinstitution of nutrition to patients who are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">starved<\/a>, severely&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">malnourished<\/a>&nbsp;or metabolically stressed due to severe illness. When too much food and\/or liquid nutrition supplement is consumed during the initial four to seven days of refeeding, this triggers synthesis of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">glycogen<\/a>, fat and protein in cells, to the detriment of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">serum (blood)<\/a>&nbsp;concentrations of potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Cardiac, pulmonary and neurological symptoms can be signs of refeeding syndrome&#8230;..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;Third spacing<\/strong>&#8221; is the abnormal accumulation of fluid into an extracellular and extravascular space. In medicine, the term is often used with regard to loss of fluid into interstitial spaces, such as with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">burns<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">edema<\/a>, but it can also refer to fluid shifts into a body cavity (transcellular space), such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">ascites<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/blog\/page\/edit\/8520399074941783062\/5082975542762104588?hl=en#\">pleural effusions<\/a>. With regard to severe burns, fluids may pool on the burn site (i.e. fluid lying outside of the interstitial tissue, exposed to evaporation) and cause depletion of the fluids.
